Footloose → Metropolitan Musical Theatre Company

Image
You b etter kick off your Sunday Shoes Adelaide, The Metropolitan Musical Theatre Company’s current production of Footloose is here to take us back to the 80s! If you’ve somehow never known the plot of Footloose, it begins when big-city teen Ren McCormack moves to the small town of Bomont, and is shocked to discover that dancing is banned. Determined to challenge this law, Ren aims to convince the town’s strongest voice, Reverend Shaw Moore, all whilst falling for his headstrong daughter, Ariel. With the iconic 80s hits you know, Footloose is a celebration of youth, freedom, and the euphoric power of dance. Directed by Matt Smith, The MET’s show brings together a diverse range of local performers to bring this show to life. Lachlan Stieger is the charming Ren McCormack - who is impressively taking on his first lead role! Playing Ariel is the incredible Vasileia Markou who has a standout voice, especially in ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ and ‘Almost Paradise.’ Together, these two had clearl...

TIMELIGHT → ILA Adelaide

Image
Internationally renowned Berlin-based artists, Flora&Fauna Visions have been presenting the world premiere of their work ‘ TIMELIGHT: Beyond Our Ticking World ’ at ILA Adelaide. ‘TIMELIGHT’ is an abstract immersive digital art piece that asks us to reflect on our relationship with time, and the ways in which we interact with it.   Upon stepping inside, you are plunged into the digital landscape. Impressively,  work is shown on 100sqm of LED screens. The largest one is curved at the center, immersing you in a panoramic view of the visual scenes.  Running for 25 mins, TIMELIGHT begins by throwing you up into the universe, pausing time as the narration reflects on its meaning. You are then bought back to earth, seemingly placed inside a clock as the screens fill with cogs and the room fills with fast ticking sounds. This frantic, and perhaps most common understanding of time is then warped towards its peaceful conclusion. Time slows to a pause, and you are a...

When We Dead Awaken → Loc'ally Theatr

Image
For only its second production, Loc’ally Theatr has chosen to confront the weighty, introspective world of iconic playwright Henrik Ibsen in their reinterpretation of When We Dead Awaken. For those unfamiliar, Ibsen’s work is certainly challenging theatrical territory, however the cast delivered a confident and thoughtful performance of this deeply psychological work.  When We Dead Awaken is Ibsen’s final play, a reflective and symbolic piece about artistic ambition, lost love, and the acceptance of death. The story follows sculptor Arnold Rubek, who is vacationing with his young wife Maia. Their strained marriage is disrupted by the sudden reappearance of Irena, Rubek’s former muse, whose intense presence reawakens memories and buried desires. As the two reconnect, they confront what was lost. In their search for redemption and meaning, they ascend a mountain together, in a final act that blurs the line between awakening and death.  Despite the challenges of performi...

And Then There Were None → Her Majesty’s Theatre

Image
Agatha Christie is the master-mind behind some of literature’s most enduring mysteries. Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing her best-selling novel, And Then There Were None, adapted for the stage!  This is a classic, dicey two-act play that keeps your mind whirring until the very end. Ten clueless strangers are lured to a mansion on Soldier Island, their host however, is nowhere to be seen. One by one, the guests begin to die, each death eerily mirroring lines from a nursery rhyme about ten little soldier boys... As suspicion mounts and alliances falter, the survivors realise the killer must be one of them.  This is theatre at its most tense and twisted, I was hooked the whole way. Agatha’s narrative, held tightly by the performers, has you in a chokehold trying to figure it out before the characters do. No matter how good you think you are, know that you are facing the Queen of Crime, and expect to be shocked and fooled throughout, in the best possible ways! ...

Beetlejuice → Regent Theatre Melbourne

Image
I stepped into the Netherworld for the first time on Sunday night in Melbourne and was transported into a hellfire Broadway extravaganza. This show is absolute chaos, and the biggest spectacle of a production I have ever seen whereby the technical capabilities of theatre are pushed to the extreme. Yet underlying all this, are the human themes of grief and loss, and what better way to explore them than through humour and satire.  On Sunday night I saw Karis Oka as Lydia Deetz and Daniel Raso as Beetlejuice, and oh my goodness they are incredible! I’m not saying anything groundbreaking -  everyone else has already confirmed that Karis was made for this role, and I absolutely agree after finally seeing her live! She grasps the goth teen archetype, one who is sarcastic and intelligent, yet beneath is a vulnerable child who just wants to be seen as she authentically navigates her grief. Her scene in the Netherworld singing ‘Home’ had me shedding tears!! What a wild, hilariou...

Kimberly Akimbo → State Theatre SA

Image
This Tony Award winning musical is making its Australian Premiere in Adelaide thanks to the State Theatre Company of SA. It’s a heartfelt, hilarious and wonderfully quirky show that leaves you with a stark reminder about how precious life is!  This coming-of-age tale follows Kimberly, who is living with a genetic condition that causes her to age four times faster than others. She turns 16, and is navigating first love, her dysfunctional family and her desire to fit in. I enjoyed the simplicity of the plot, in that the remaining characters are raw, flawed yet still all well-meaning. Her high school peers are the loveable group of misfits, played by Allycia Angeles, Marty Alix, Alana Iannace and Jacob Rozario. Together with Kimberly’s love interest Seth, performed by Darcy Wain, they portray a heartwarming bunch of teens! Their quirky group dynamic and underdog status make them relatable to one’s inner teen, and their performances captured their adolescent view of the world....
