Phoebs, You’re a Lesbian → Adelaide Fringe
Phoebs, You’re a Lesbian marks a stellar Fringe debut from Phoebe Rodger. This one woman cabaret is a charming and cheeky plunge into queer identity and self-discovery. Additionally, Rodger does not shy away from political and societal commentary that purposefully bites, bringing her whole show together with a message about recognition of the past and acceptance of others.
The show begins with anecdotes of Phoebe’s road to the discovery of her queer self - from the embarrassingly “late” first kiss to being attracted to “feminine” men. In true cabaret fashion, she sings through most of these tales and even effortlessly throws in a song-and-tap number. She instantly has the audience in the pocket of her pink-sparkly-jumpsuit and never lets this connection falter.
Phoebe is an incredible vocalist, writing many original (and damn catchy!) songs for this work. For the majority of the show, she is doing it all at once - playing an instrument, singing and storytelling, with a comfortable ease. She also has a quick, witty sense of humour that guaranteed the landing of her comedic moments.
Phoebe has crafted her show with a dynamic narrative line that takes the audience through the laughs and also the poignant, bittersweet moments. This creative choice allows her to drive home a message and reminder that one’s ability to be safely, and openly queer is a privilege that many don’t have. Yes, it is nice to see a Fringe show that merely makes us laugh, however art is also meant to challenge and educate us, and this is where Phoebe decides to take her performance with mighty success. I can safely say we were all changed for the better, because we saw Phoebs, You're a Lesbian...
It was inspiring to watch a young woman’s voice being amplified (literally and metaphorically) in a space like this. I’m sure this debut is just the beginning for this emerging cabaret star, do not miss this marvelous first work!
