Beautiful Lies → Adelaide Fringe

 Thematically approaching the concept of ‘lies,’ Matt Hawke has crafted a beautiful debut Fringe show that is equally comedic and reflective. Hawke’s concept asks us to consider the lies that we are told from birth, the white lies we tell others, and the lies we tell ourselves, reflecting on their impacts across our lives. 


Hawke begins with an at ease charisma and dry sense of humour that lands with the audience instantly. In between his anecdotes, are the songs he has composed for the show. Some of them exaggerated and satirical (like the one about John Cena faking his wrestling, LOL) and others written to be impactful and emotive. His final, gentle song titled Beautiful Lies is particularly impactful, as just his soft vocals and guitar hum through the audience. 


I admired how he unapologetically lets the audience into his wild thoughts and worries, using his cheeky and dark humour to his advantage, crafting a unique cabaret style. When the show comes full circle to its conclusion, it's certain that Hawke has cleverly approached the craftsmanship of his work to leave a lasting impression. All the detours and songs along the way culminate in a message that the lies we tell ourselves, are perhaps the most okay and important ones if they bring us a sense of comfort through life’s challenges. 


Hawke has already cemented himself as a star. Beautiful Lies is intelligent, playful and highly resonant to all. With audiences already squeezed into his small venue, I am certain this won’t be the last time Hawke will share this incredible work.

  For only its second production, Loc’ally Theatr has chosen to confront the weighty, introspective world of iconic playwright Henrik Ibsen in their reinterpretation of When We Dead Awaken. For those unfamiliar, Ibsen’s work is certainly challenging theatrical territory, however the cast delivered a confident and thoughtful performance of this deeply psychological work.  When We Dead Awaken is Ibsen’s final play, a reflective and symbolic piece about artistic ambition, lost love, and the acceptance of death. The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee → Funk Soul Productions

  R-O-L-L-I-C-K-I-N-G: an adjective to describe Funk Soul’s Production of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. meaning: exuberantly lively and amusing . I was very excited to return to a Funk Soul Production to kick off my 2026 season of community theatre. Last year’s production of ‘The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals’ was a personal standout, and after last night, I continue to remain utterly impressed at what a theatre company with an average age of 22 years old can accomplish!
