Mother Nature → Australian Calisthenics Theatre Company
On Friday, ACTC premiered ‘Mother Nature’ at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, and it truly was calisthenics as I have never seen before! Founders Brooke Brown and Carly Aherne have developed an entertaining narrative concept behind the show - it is the story of becoming Mother Nature, with a clever focus on how she meets the elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Wind, Light and Sun. Each scene is a dynamic display of the calisthenics art form. Approx. 150 dancers perform it all, from clubs, marching formation changes, rods, ballet, acrobatics and contemporary dance. Having an almost birds-eye view of this show from where I was sitting was most impressive, as the combination of the lighting, formations, costumes and movements created a kaleidoscope of colour and life. I could still see every expression and sparkling rhinestone on the dancers from above! Performing for an arena audience is no easy feat, yet their artistry and performance quality of each dancer, no matter their age, was that of professionals.
Soundtracking this epic performance was The Cast Band, with Chloe Castledine and JD Smith on vocals. The medley of music choices fit each song into the scene in a unique mixture of pop, musical theatre and rock hits, as well as their own original instrumental score made just for the show. Having the live band created fiery builds of sound that corresponded with the action taking place on stage, likewise when the softer strings had their moments to complement the lyrical choreography.
‘Mother Nature’ is far beyond a ‘showcase,’ ACTC have redefined the parameters of Calisthenics, creating a full-blown theatrical experience that has the potential to be known across the globe.
