UP on Purpose: Adelaide's NEW morning Dance Party!

Image
ATTN: Morning people and Wannabe Morning People of Adelaide!  This is UP on Purpose, a new morning dance party here to UPlift and UPgrade your day ahead! At the stunning My Cloud Nine Studio on Gilbert Street, between 8:30-10:30am, is a “comfy clubbing” experience that's 0% alcohol, but 100% vibes!  With “morning culture” on the rise, and after being inspired by similar events overseas, founder Martine Quigley has created an epic event format where positive mindset and movement meet. From the outset, you are greeted by the wonderful Sunrise Crew with a hot, caffeine-free drink before entering the party realm. The music was already pumping upon arrival, and it was not long until the whole room was up and dancing, comfy clothes and all, all before 9am!  An integral part of the morning is the 15 minute mindset UPgrade - a moment to check in, settle your thoughts, and self-affirm all that has passed, and what’s to come. Once it wraps, the volume rises, the cushions are...

Beetlejuice → Regent Theatre Melbourne

Image
I stepped into the Netherworld for the first time on Sunday night in Melbourne and was transported into a hellfire Broadway extravaganza. This show is absolute chaos, and the biggest spectacle of a production I have ever seen whereby the technical capabilities of theatre are pushed to the extreme. Yet underlying all this, are the human themes of grief and loss, and what better way to explore them than through humour and satire.  On Sunday night I saw Karis Oka as Lydia Deetz and Daniel Raso as Beetlejuice, and oh my goodness they are incredible! I’m not saying anything groundbreaking -  everyone else has already confirmed that Karis was made for this role, and I absolutely agree after finally seeing her live! She grasps the goth teen archetype, one who is sarcastic and intelligent, yet beneath is a vulnerable child who just wants to be seen as she authentically navigates her grief. Her scene in the Netherworld singing ‘Home’ had me shedding tears!! What a wild, hilariou...

Kimberly Akimbo → State Theatre SA

Image
This Tony Award winning musical is making its Australian Premiere in Adelaide thanks to the State Theatre Company of SA. It’s a heartfelt, hilarious and wonderfully quirky show that leaves you with a stark reminder about how precious life is!  This coming-of-age tale follows Kimberly, who is living with a genetic condition that causes her to age four times faster than others. She turns 16, and is navigating first love, her dysfunctional family and her desire to fit in. I enjoyed the simplicity of the plot, in that the remaining characters are raw, flawed yet still all well-meaning. Her high school peers are the loveable group of misfits, played by Allycia Angeles, Marty Alix, Alana Iannace and Jacob Rozario. Together with Kimberly’s love interest Seth, performed by Darcy Wain, they portray a heartwarming bunch of teens! Their quirky group dynamic and underdog status make them relatable to one’s inner teen, and their performances captured their adolescent view of the world....

Mother Nature → Australian Calisthenics Theatre Company

Image
The Australian Calisthenics Theatre Company are pioneering an epic new form of calisthenics, transforming this traditional sport into a theatrical arena spectacular bound to draw audiences around the country.  On Friday, ACTC premiered ‘Mother Nature’ at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, and it truly was calisthenics as I have never seen before! Founders Brooke Brown and Carly Aherne have developed an entertaining narrative concept behind the show - it is the story of becoming Mother Nature, with a clever focus on how she meets the elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Wind, Light and Sun. Each scene is a dynamic display of the calisthenics art form. Approx. 150 dancers perform it all, from clubs, marching formation changes, rods, ballet, acrobatics and contemporary dance. Having an almost birds-eye view of this show from where I was sitting was most impressive, as the combination of the lighting, formations, costumes and movements created a kaleidoscope of colour and life. I ...
