HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH → GWB Entertainment

You could see Hedwig and the Angry Inch for the music alone, for Sean Miley Moore alone, or just for a visit to the Queens Theatre - but combined this show is an extra special theatre experience that Adelaide gets to have first!

I honestly had no idea what to expect heading in to see Hedwig, but now I understand why it has earned its rightful place in the musical theatre canon. Part rock concert, part confession, Hedwig and the Angry Inch follows Hedwig, an immigrant from East Berlin, and her band, the Angry Inch, on their turbulent USA tour. Her story though, explores one’s constant questioning of identity, and how relationships shape us for better or worse.

In true Queens theatre fashion, the show begins from the road outside. Setting the scene were the “German” and “American” ushers giving us concert wristbands for our seats, before entering the site of a dingy, middle-American music venue.

Sean Miley Moore has again solidified their status as a world-class performing artist, and a treasure of Australian theatre. There is no doubt this role is highly advanced, and they had the audience absolutely transfixed in sheer amazement at their execution of this new interpretation of Hedwig’s character. Transitioning between the high energy rock numbers, to the anguished, vulnerable storytelling without needing to catch a breath, was a feat in itself. The audience engagement was high as the narrative stretched beyond the stage, fully inviting us into Hedwig’s realm. Adam Noviello as Yitzak was more than Hedwig’s “supporting role.” Whilst they were incredibly hilarious, there were also moments of subtle angst and strong presence, drawing a sense of curiosity to Yitzak’s story. Together, I thought they expertly conveyed the complex bond  between these characters.

In our current climate where personal expressions are sadly ridiculed, there is no better time to see this show about re-claiming your identity and having faith in the star you know you can be. Expect more than to merely be sitting in a theatre seat, rather, you’ll be immersed in the highest calibre of storytelling.
