THE GUY WHO DIDN’T LIKE MUSICALS → Funk Soul Productions

Friday 31st January, Sophie Tsoulos, @theatrediaries.adl

Okay friends, I'm going in strong and stating that it’s inevitable that you will love ‘The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals,’ Funk Soul Production‘s second locally produced show,
and Adelaide’s premiere of this hilarious StarKid show!

Off that bat, what a triumph of a production by the amazing cast and crew! Who, with an average age of 21 years old, had multiple roles both on and off stage. The show is a hilarious horror comedy that follows Paul, the Guy who doesn’t like musicals, as a brain altering musical apocalypse sweeps through his town, infecting mundanes with possibly the worst disease of all - song and dance.

The amazing cast expertly played these comical and quirky characters, channeling the essence of StarKid’s usual flamboyant and (a little) unorthodox character personalities. You could tell they were both comfortable in these roles as well as having the most outrageously fun time performing them. I thought Allycia Angeles’ choreography and the casts’ execution of such enhanced the storytelling through the jovial movements and clever use of constant movement on stage (and through the audience!). And Lastly, the vocals in conjunction with all of this just further showcased the incredible talents of these performers!

I honestly had such a fun time and I know Friday’s audience did too because there were just constant outbursts of laughter! It is great to see a local company with a cohesive mission to “challenge the perception of modern theatre” and treat our city to something new - because there is not a soul who will not love this! If you know anyone who doesn’t like musicals, please take them to this and they’ll be on board.
